CONTRARY TO THE OPINION OF MANY PEOPLE, LEADERS ARE NOT BORN. LEADERS ARE MADE; THEY ARE MADE BY EFFORT AND HARD WORK.
Name a situation at school where you did not show the best kind of leadership.

Tell two ways you could have done it differently.

WHAT KIND OF LEADER AM I?

What qualities of a leader do I possess?

What qualities of a successful leader do I want to develop more fully this year?

How can I develop those qualities?

A Successful Leader Has....
Loyalty No person has ever achieved leadership without loyalty to the cause, the job, colleagues, superiors, and subordinates.
Enthusiasm For life, the task, people, little things and big things, achievement, and service to humanity.
Attitude A successful leader strives to keep a positive attitude toward all events and every type of person, even when the going gets tough!
Dedication To self, the service of others and to the task at hand distinguishes a successful leader from other leaders.
Example A leader teaches by what they say and do. A leadership position requires one to set good examples at all time.
Responsibility A successful leader understands that a leadership position is not a position of glory and popularity, but a position of responsibility.
Sacrifice A successful leader will sacrifice self needs to meet the needs of the whole group.
Humor A healthy sense of humor is imperative - especially when properly evaluating both the serious and lighter sides of life.
Initiative A leader must know how and when to step in and do a job without being told or directed, and see the task through to completion.
Personality This does not necessarily mean extrovert or "outgoing," but a personality that embraces intellectual honesty, fairness, understanding, and above all, high moral standards.
Everything I needed to know about leadership I learned from....
TEN TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL LEADERS
1. BE HUMBLE - Know that whatever power you possess was given to you, and if used improperly, can be taken away.
2. INVOLVE OTHERS - Realize that you cannot do everything on your own. You will need help! Most importantly as a leader, take it upon your self to involve those people aren't usually involved. Make them feel involved and important.
3. DON'T DICTATE - Delegate! It is easy. Don't tell people what they have to do, ask them to help out. Make sure you match the task to the capabilities of the person. Find where people's strengths lie, and use them effectively.
4. FOLLOW UP - Remember, you are the person in charge. Which means, you are responsible for successful completion of your job(s)? Check up on things regularly to see how they are going.
5. BE FLEXIBLE - Things rarely happen the way they are supposed to. Have back up plans ready. Look for alternative before you need them.
6. ATTITUDE CHECK - Laugh! A positive attitude is something you have to work at. Everything and everyone has a bright side, you just have to find it.
7. MANAGE YOUR TIME - Be organized. Keep a calendar of important times and dates. Remember, you can say "NO!" Don't overload. Remember to save time to do the things you enjoy.
8. SAY "THANKS!" - If you recognize the efforts of others, whether small or large, they'll be more likely to help you again.
9. EVALUATE - Learn to criticize effectively. Suggest ways in which a job might be done more easily without putting another person on the defensive. Listen to all input without judgment.
10. ADMIT MISTAKES - When things go wrong, take responsibility. Most importantly, learn from your mistakes, so you can improve.
"Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other."

LEADERS AND OTHERS

LEADERS........
Make commitments.
Manages time wisely.
Look at problems and solves them.
Say "Let’s find out."
Knows what to fight for and what to compromise on.
Would rather be admired than liked,
But prefer both
Listens and understands.
Says "There ought to be a better way
to do it."
Take big problems and separate them
Into smaller parts.
Learns from mistakes.
Is sensitive to everyone around them.
Is not afraid to contradict himself

Stops talking when they have made their point.
Acts the same toward everyone.

OTHERS.........
Make promises
Is "too busy."
Go around problems and never get past them.
say "Nobody knows."
Compromise and fight on things they shouldn't.
would rather be liked
matters the cost.
Only hear.
say "That's the way its always been done."
take little problems and roll Them all together.
Learn only to never try anything different.
Are sensitive to their own needs.
are more concerned with When faced with a contradiction. Being consistent than right.
keep talking.... and talking... and talking.....
Fawn on popular people and snub the weak.

A Worksheet for a Successful Year
A leadership decision/task I have to make/perform this quarter/month is...

What are my obstacles/barriers?

What can I do socially (involving others in social settings, surroundings, interactions) to help achieve this goal?

What can I do personally (involving doing things that improve "you" individually) to help achieve this goal?

What can I do academically (anything related to academic success) help to achieve this goal?

Who can I go to for help or support?
_ _
_ _
Who are the leaders I most admire for the type of decision/task I have to make/perform?
_ _
_ _
What was my outcome(s)?

Leadership Contract

1. I will be a good listener. (Don’t do all the talking; get the other person to talk-to and with you. Ask questions to keep the conversation moving and listen intently.)
2. I will dedicate myself to getting to myself and understanding why people act as they do. (A leader must be tolerant of self and others; keep cool; develop an emotional stability on which others can rely.)
3. I will do as I say; be dependable – keep appointments; fulfill promises; build a reputation for reliability; give other people a reason for having confidence; maintain integrity.
4. I will honour the ideas and suggestions of others. (Leaders take time to give full consideration to proposals of other people . . . and credit; listen to potential solutions to problems. Show interest by sincere cooperation. Develop the skills of efficient listening.)
5. I will be courteous, polite, and tactful. (Honestly respect the dignity of each other human being.)
6. I will be patient with those gifted differently than myself. (A display of superior intelligence or ability is a put-down to followers. Slower or bashful individuals often come up with great ideas. A good leader realizes the genius of every human being and attempts to help that genius succeed.)
7. I will be positive. (A happy person attracts people. Discover the new ideas of other people. See a positive approach to the solution of problems.)
8. I will make every effort to avoid favoritism. (Be fair, frank and honest; develop genuine friendships with people and work at keeping friendships active.)
9. I will make a significant contribution to every job. (Demonstrate humility while being personally committed to achieving goals.)
10. I will find a role model and associate with other leaders (Watch what they do; benefit from their examples; learn while showing others how to do things. The process can be more important than the product!)
11. I will show empathy with others; care; have compassion. (See problems from another person’s point-of-view. Be able to put yourself in another’s place and communicate the dimensions of the personal situation.)
